ID tips

Vermont Wood Fern is the hybrid between Marginal Wood Fern and Male Fern. It is intermediate between them in a number of characteristics, e.g. sori placement, number of pinnae per frond, number of pinnules per pinnae, and blade shape. As is the case with many hybrids, in a mixed poplulation they may be larger than either parent. We found the sinuses between pinnules much larger than in Male Fern, an easy identification tool.

In the IMAGE, the fern on the right with overlapping pinnules is Male Fern.
