Description

We will show participants how to distinguish the nine species of Wood Ferns that are native to New England, and discuss their tendancy to hybridize. We will visit seven species and several hybrids in the field.

The new NEWFS Hobbs Fern Sanctuary in New Hampshire offers an unusually rich environment and biodiversity of ferns and horsetails. There is a Dryopteris swamp with a dozen Wood Fern species and hybrids, and a limey talus slope covered with Maidenhair, Bulblet, and Silvery Glade Ferns that is home to several rare species.
