Description

Ferns are the most popular of the pteridophytes (larger sporebearing plants). They are more readily recognized, more studied, and more prevalent in the Garden in the Woods beds. We have taught a survey course of Massachusetts ferns for five years.

This class will instead discuss the club-mosses (and fir-mosses), horsetails, selaginella, and even mention isoetes. These plants, whose ancestors grew with tree ferns in ancient forests to lay down the coal beds, are common (and commonly overlooked) members of our natural communities in forests and fields.

We will have classroom lecture and exhibits on Saturday and a field trip on Sunday.
